Hadith – Al-Muwatta 48.12, Similar narration in Abu Dawood #4082
Yahya related to me from Malik from al Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman that his father said, “I asked Abu Said al-Khudri about the lower garment. He said that he would inform me with knowledge and that he had heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, ‘The lower garment of the mumin should reach to the middle of his calves. There is no harm in what is between that and the ankles. What is lower than that is in the Fire. What is lower than that is in the Fire. On the Day of Rising, Allah will not look at a person who trails his lower garment in arrogance.’ ”
Hadith – Sahih Al-Bukhari 7.678, Narrated Abu Huraira, r.a.
The Prophet (saaws) said, “The part of an Izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”
Hadith – Sunan of Abu Dawood, Narrated AbuJurayy Jabir ibn Salim al-Hujaymi
The Prophet saaws said, “Have your lower garment halfway down your shin; if you cannot do it, have it up to the ankles. Beware of trailing the lower garment, for it is conceit and Allah does not like conceit.”
Folding up the hem because your garment is too long, is forbidden. Pull the trousers upwards, instead. (hint: hard to do if your pants are too tight to start with!)

Hadith – Sahih Muslim #5200, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar, r.a.
- I happened to pass before Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) with my lower garment trailing (upon the ground). He said: Abdullah, tug up your lower garment. I tugged it up, and he again said: Tug it still further, and I tugged it still further and I went on tugging it afterward, whereupon some of the people said: To what extent? Thereupon he said: To the middle of the shanks*.

Said Ibn ‘Abbas, “The Prophet ordered us to prostrate on seven bodily parts and not to fold back the hair or clothing: the forehead, the hands, the knees and the feet.” In another wording, the Prophet said, “I have been ordered to prostrate on seven bodily parts: the forehead, and he pointed to his nose, the hands, the knees and the ends of the feet.” (Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.) In another narration, he said, “I have been ordered to prostrate on seven bodily parts and not to fold back the hair or clothing: the forehead, the nose, the hands, the knees and the feet.” (Related by Muslim and an-Nasa’i.)
what’s your point?
Assalaam alaikum:
my point is that we all muslim males must make our trousers short so that it is above our ankles.
ALLAH knows BEST
It is narrated from Hadhrat Abu Zarr (Radhiallaahu Anhu) that Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Three groups of people Allah will not talk to on the day of Qiyaamat nor will he look to them nor will he purify them and for them is severe punishment’. Hadhrat Abu Dharr (Radhiallaahu Anhu) says, ‘Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said this three times. Hadhrat Abu Dharr (Radhiallaahu Anhu) said, ‘May they be losers. Who are they O Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam).’ Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘He who wears his pants below his ankles. The one who talks of that good which he did for a person and that person who sells his goods with false oaths.’ (Muslim)
In this Hadith, firstly, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) speaks about those people who wear their pants below their ankles out of pride. This is a very grave sin. What could be worse than Allah Ta’ala not speaking to a person, not even looking at him and dooming him to a painful punishment.
Furthermore, it is narrated from Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Umar (Radhiallaahu Anhu). He says Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘That part below the ankles which is covered by the pants will be in the fire of hell. Nowadays, when you remind a person to raise his pants above his ankles. He says, ‘The Hadith only mentions it in regards to those people who do it out of pride. This is quite a widespread misconception which is dealt with in the following Hadith: Sayyiduna Jaabir ibn Saleem (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Be careful with regards to dragging your clothes (below the ankles), for verily it is from the acts of pride.’ (Sunan Abu Dawud)
Here, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) explains to us that the act of letting the pants go below the ankles is in itself an act of pride. (See Fathul Baari vol.10 pg.210) And as for Salaat in this condition, Sayyiduna ibn Mas’ood (Radhiallaahu Anhu) is reported to have said that such a person is out of the protection of Allah Ta’ala. (Ibid) May Allah Ta’ala save us all, Aameen and
Allah Ta’ala Knows Best,
i have always been told that you only have to have your pants above your ankles when you read namaaz………
can someone please help me in this matter???

asalamu alaykum brother i just wanted to ask if your garment is long and even when you pull it up it is still long and covering your ankle what should i do?
Right now i stuff it in my socks and raise my socks+the pants above my ankles is that permissible
wa alaykumussalaam, if trousers are below the ankles then cut it so that it will be above the ankles. socks is not something which we wear or hang from hip to below, so wearing socks is not a problem. ALLAH knows best.
Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is more than I expected for when I found a link on Delicious telling that the info here is quite decent. Thanks.
Since it has been said by the prophet and unliked by Allah but what is the logical explanation behind tugging the trouser above the ankle?
in the name of ALLAH, assalaamu alaikum, if we are a momin then one should have to obey allah and his massanger.
in the name of ALLAH, obey allah and his massenger, we have to follow whatever allah and his massenger ordered us, without any modification and change.
assalamualaikum,
I still see people wearing their trousers below ankles even in namaz who is responsible for this ?
we….the ummathi….
how???
dawath…din ki dawath…..thablig…
as salaamu alaykum i need to find in the Quran were it say man should were the pants above there ankles insha’Allah
which surah in the quran speack about mens
wearing pants above ur ankles
as salaamu alaykum bro & sis if anyone no what surah in the Quran speack abt men should wear there pants above there ankle ‘ me n my husband wer takin abt that n he just what to see it for hisself ””’insha’Allah
For your husband sake. InshaAllah
Well it is found in the Quran where Allah azwajal says,”Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil): if ye do turn back, know ye that it is Our Messenger’s duty to proclaim (the Message) in the clearest manner.
So obeying the messenger of Allah taa’ala, you are infact fulfilling the requirements of this ayah i.e. following the sunnah (in this case placing the garment above the ankle, with the clear proofs above)
HOWEVER by not following the sunnah of the messenger of Allah (ALL the companions had the garments above their ankles, if they didnt they had a VALID reason) then your in a very dangerous position.
And Allah taa’ala knows best
SHUKAN
So it’s said by someone to wear trousers in such a way…hmmm ok. Why? Justify it. Something is said and some people idly follow…ridiculous! It’s not justified why to wear your trousers above your ankles! It makes no sense…totally against Islam which DOES make sense!
asalamu alaykum bro’s,
i just wanted to know if folding your pants is haraam because a sheik named Abu-Taubah told me it is haraam to fold the pants. he said it is better to tuck your pants in your socks. he also said its sunnah. im shocked because half the people are saying fold and the other are saying tuck in. for now im taking the sheiks advice. please give me answer soon!
Sometimes in the Deen things are not explained as to why they should be done and only Allah (swt) knows why these things should be done. For example: why do we pray with our feet apart according to our shoulder width? Why do we pray the way we do? etc. We dont ”blindly follow” something, if it from the Quran and Sunnah we surely know that it is right and this is what we follow.
I just wore my first pant stiched above ankel . ALLAH SW ki Rahmant Hai . SAAS KI GULAMI HAI.
SAAS ki Sunnath hai INSHALLAH ALLAH SW ku pasand agayi to SAAS ke sathke mai Jannat Mlegi INSHALLAH. yeh Sab ke liye hai .

Assalamu’alaykm, I think that we should stop and try to understand why the prophet (pbuh) said we should wear them above our ankle. It’s because in that time period, the arrogant were the ones who dragged their robes and thobes on the floor. In the world we live in today, wearing pants past your ankles is not seen as arrogance, and many of us don’t even wear robes! That’s why I do not think that this can be applied now. Instead we should avoid doing things that show arrogance in this time period, whatever they may be, not worry about having our pants above our ankles when this is not seen as arrogant in today’s world.
Assalamu Alaykum!
You hit the point brother. This is applicable in the days of the prophet (pbuh) when wearing long, flowing robes connotes arrogance. Wearing pants past the ankles does not in any way connote arrogance.
We should be careful following SOLELY the Holy Quran and not follow conjectures (53:23).
Brother today as well. If our pants are short like the Sahabas wore the Kufar will laugh at us for poor fashion, so for arrogance we wear long pants to fit in with the Kufar? Who is it better to follow today’s kufar or the Sahabas?
Ibn ‘Abbaas reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah will not look at the one who wears his lower garment below his ankles.” (Reported by al-Nisaa’i in al-Mujtabaa, Kitaab al-Zeenah, Baab Isbaal al-Izaar).
Hudhayfah said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took hold of the muscle of my calf (or his calf) and said, ‘This is where the izaar should stop; if you insist, it may be lower, but it should not reach the ankles.’” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth; see Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 1783)
All of the ahaadeeth quoted above speak against isbaal, whether or not the intention is to show off; but if a person does this deliberately out of arrogance, there is no doubt that his sin is greater. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah will not look at the one who trails his izaar on the ground out of pride.” (al-Bukhaari, no. 5788)
Jaabir ibn Sulaym said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to me: ‘Beware of wearing one’s lower garment below the ankles, because this is a kind of showing-off, and Allaah does not love showing-off.’” (Regarded as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi, no. 2722).
No one is able to be completely free of pride and arrogance, even if he claims that this is so. Such a claim is unacceptable, because by saying it, he is praising himself. Only in the case of those whom the wahy (revelation) testified that they were free of pride do we believe that this is the case. For example, there is a hadeeth which states that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever trails his garment on the ground out of pride, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Bakr said to him, “O Messenger of Allaah, my izaar slips down if I do not pay attention to it.” He said: “You are not one of those who do it out of pride.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 5784)
What indicates that isbaal is prohibited even if it is not done out of pride is the hadeeth of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The lower garment of the Muslim should come down to mid-calf, but there is nothing wrong if it is between that point and the ankles. Whatever is lower than the ankles is in the Fire. Whoever trails his garment on the ground out of pride, Allaah will not look at him.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, no. 4093, with a saheeh isnaad.)
ASSALAM,MAY ALLAH REWARD UR EFFORTS TOWARDS THE UPLIFT OF ISLAM

People of the Islamic faith,
Your religion is made by man for man and is all about control ,
You people are so full of shit it beggets belief that you exist.
You are everything that Australia is not
And as a representive of the people we request that you remove your people to a country that actually wants you,
A good suggestion would be the country you came from
so if I cannot pull my pants up, is it still forbidden to fold the hem? or should I have my pants shortened, I don’t have a problem with it. I’ll do it if I have to. I was getting by, by folding the hem for some time now. An answer would be much appreciated.
Aussie, Look yourself in the mirror of the history of Australia. Your first is to go back to the mother country from where your forebears, who were no longer wanted in that country because they were criminals, exported to Australia. Or else, you are a giant hypocrite, son or daughter of racist bigots.
Who is the racist mate, YOU Are, you come into my country, want your laws, your ways, and expect it ? When you don’t get it you shout rasists? What are you but a son of a marriage of dogs and pigs? Come here and tell us how to live? Why don’t you go back to the cesspool you call your stinking country where you can’t live in pice and that’s why you are here? You arrogant son of a dog and pig
Assalamu Alaykum Brothers and sisters.
Anyone here have knowledge in Arabic grammer. No not modern Arabic but classic Islamic Arabic? In the Hadis Shareef’s the word “IZAR” is mentioned. But as we look above and at some peoples comments, this is only translated as “lower garment” or trousers. Where is your proof that IZAR means lower garment? The Arabs in the time of Rasulullah (saw) called a piece of clothing that covered the whole body IZAR. i.e it is not a “lower garment” but one which covers the whole body starting from the shoulders.
Plus, why would dragging our trousers on the ground through all that dirt be a sign of arrogance? But, when we think about the rich and loyalty, we find that Kings use to and some still, wear robes which start from the shoulder and pass below the ankles and trail behind them when they walk. This IS a sign of arrogance, stating that I am rich I am powerful. So, as we can see, the word IZAR points to this type of clothing and not lower garment.
Some Ulama have said that IZAR means lower garment. As a brother asked before, what is the REASON for this being Haram. Well, when we think of the times of Rasulullah (saw) in the desert and people wearing slippers, having long trousers would result in them becoming dirty easily. Jump to today’s time, if a brother wears trousers which are at a reasonable length, and under them wears shoes when they are outside, then the trousers would be, for an extent, saved from dirt.
ONE ADVICE: Brother’s and sisters, please do not just read the English translations of an Ayah or Hadis Shareef but instead look at its original and study the words. Don’t just read the Ayah or Hadis Shareef and think that you understand it, read the Tafseer and other related materials with it.
May Allah (swt) give us peace and blessings both in this world and the hereafter. Maassalama
You are bloody insane
Sorry that was rude, but this Hadith is extreme, and very improper especially for those who are going to work and have to look respectable. Islam is not meant to be a burden, I do not want to spend my whole day worrying about my pant leg.
jazakumulah hairah. Kip d gud wrk u ar doing n may almgty Allah rwrd abundntly. Amin
Jazakallah khair, I needed it for one of my brother he asked me for the references and I find it here what I needed.
My school teachers is not allowing to wore the pant above knee level how can I understand them?
